Creating your own miniature railway village can be a huge but rewarding task.

Relationship

You may want to add a city or cityscape to your existing model train layout, but where do you start? Well, you can start by browsing the internet for ideas, or visit a local model train club, or attend some train shows or exhibitions. All of these are excellent sources of ideas.

Creating your own small-scale town or city will require a lot of work and attention to detail. However, painting and assembling kits, or building buildings from scratch can be a fun activity, especially when you can see the final completed structure nestle nicely into a city scene in your design.

You can also take a trip to an actual model railroad town to find ideas to incorporate into your own model railroad.

Here are a couple of model railway villages I discovered after a quick internet search:

Model Railway Village of Clonakilty, West Cork is located in Ireland.

Boothbay Railway Village is located in Bowdoin, Maine.

There will be many more, but as an example, let’s see what these towns show:

1. The Model Railway Village of Clonakilty is like a step back into the 1940’s, discovering what the railway system was like during that time. It is intriguing for young and old alike. The models and figurines on display in the town were built on a 1:24 scale. A lot of planning and time went into rendering these old trains and towns.

2. Boothbay Railway Village is a much smaller project than the village in Ireland, but it has its own significance. Boothbay Railway Village represents Maine during the 1950s and 1960s, when both steam and diesel locomotives were in use.

How to learn from these and other towns:

Model Railway Village architects took drawings and photos of the original structures and scaled them down where they began to model the trains and buildings.

This is the same approach train hobbyists take when building their own models.

If you plan to start a model of a certain time and place, it is recommended that you approach the situation in the same way as the architects who built Model Railway Village. First examine photographs from the past and prepare your own sketches that are reduced to the size you want to work with. Use sketches and photos for reference throughout the process of building your own model.

After deciding on a particular era to represent, you’ll want to search for all the corresponding locomotives and carriages that fit your model trains and layout.

The most important thing you’ll want to find out is whether there were diesel trains or steam trains in your day. From here you can start building your model around your locomotives. It would also be advantageous to visit the site of the train you want to represent. Like the previous two towns, they are located in the area where they are modeling, but you most likely won’t be able to. If you can, take a trip to the site where the train still stands today or was in the past. Take note of the landscape, ask questions of the people who live and have lived there to make your model even more specific and personal.

You may want to consult an expert historian who knows certain facts that might be useful for your model. The more specific you can be with your information and details, the more accurate your model will be and the more satisfied you will be with the end result.

Building your own miniature railway town model:

· First of all, keep in mind that it will take you quite some time to build your own scaled railway village.

You will need the correct materials and the corresponding models of locomotives, carriages and buildings.

· Decide if you want to build your village from scratch or not. Obviously, building your village from scratch is for hardcore hobbyists, but if you have the money and time, you might want to experiment with building a village on your own.

Get all the appropriate accessories like model trees and bushes to go along with your track. This will make the environment look more realistic and true to your model.

· Focus on weathering and details to add life, character and realism to the scene.

Creating your own miniature railway villages can be a great way to show off your railway modeling talents. It’s just one of the many aspects of this great hobby that makes it such a joy to participate in.
