Vicks VapoRub, Vaseline or Jojoba Oil for Hemorrhoid Treatment?

Technology

Hemorrhoids, also known as “piles,” are a disorder of the anus in which the surrounding veins become inflamed and swollen. This happens due to constant and prolonged pressure on these blood vessels. People with this condition suffer from mild to moderate pain, which is quite a stressful experience. There are two types: external and internal. The classification refers to the location of the swollen veins.

Because this condition is idiopathic in nature, treatment is geared toward relieving symptoms. This means that it treats pain, inflammation, swelling, and other less common manifestations of this disease. Sometimes the prescribed treatment cannot completely alleviate the pain and discomfort resulting from the condition. People affected by hemorrhoids seek additional means to improve their symptoms. Some of the more popular methods include applying a soothing ointment to the area.

jojoba oil

This is an extract from the Simmondsia chinensis plant. It is a powerful moisturizer and is commonly used as an additive in cosmetics, more specifically shampoos, conditioners, and lotions. It can also increase the elasticity of the skin, thus preventing wrinkles. Also, due to its characteristic fungicidal capacity, it has been used as a treatment for mildew.

Due to these properties, jojoba oil has also been applied to inflamed external hemorrhoids. Users have reported its effectiveness in relieving discomfort and reducing inflammation. And because it’s a natural product, it’s less likely to cause hypersensitivity reactions.

Vicks VaporRub

There has been quite a stir in the use of Vicks Vapor Rub to relieve pain from an inflamed anus. Many users have mixed reactions after applying the ointment: some report that it only adds insult to injury as the ointment intensifies the pain of their hemorrhoids, while others say it’s the best home remedy they’ve ever tried. Due to these conflicting findings, the use of Vicks VaporRub to treat external hemorrhoids is not well known.

There are two ways to apply the product to the affected area: rubbing it directly on the inflamed area or dissolving it in a bucket of hot water and letting the steam rise to the affected area. When used correctly, it can be a powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Its menthol component has cooling properties that relieves any pain and reduces inflammation present.

A word of caution: Vicks VaporRub clearly states on its packaging that it is for external use only. Therefore, its use is contraindicated in areas with broken skin. One of its ingredients (campor) can be toxic to the exposed area.

vaseline lotion

Like the two products mentioned above, Vaseline lotion works to soothe pain in the area where it is applied, providing a cooling sensation. Its moisturizing properties can help improve the elasticity of the affected area and can prevent dryness. However, it cannot reduce inflammation.

The best home remedy

Taking the aforementioned information into account, it can be said that among the three topical ointments, jojoba oil tops the list as the most effective. Close behind is Vaseline and then Vicks VaporRub. Natural products take precedence over chemically produced ointments.
