Traffic tips for the week

This morning I’m diving into a little book with big ideas, “SEO Step by Step” is a book for beginners that gives simple tips to improve search engine rankings to bring you free traffic. Many people think that spending time on SEO is unnecessary and prefer to spend time and money on paid advertising. However, some simple actions are well worth the time invested.

Meta tags, tags and images are hot topics. On your website there are three meta tags. First is the title tag, it’s for the title of that particular page and is usually taken automatically from your title. The second is the keyword tag, since spammers have abused it, it’s pretty much irrelevant now.

Third, there is a meta description tag, which allows you to accurately describe what the page is about. You’ve probably seen these short descriptions when you do a Google search. A good description is about 160 characters, very relevant to the content of the page, Google is very interested in relevance to help their search engines find what they are looking for. Although Google can curate its own summary, it’s always a good practice to write an invitation message to encourage people to click through to your website in searches.

If your website is built by WordPress, you can add a plugin in the to set meta descriptions.

To get photos and images collected by Google, make sure you set the tags correctly. Also make sure that they are all stored on your website hosting, not in the image directory, as they would get the attention of the search engine and not your website.

Image file name, separated by hyphens (maximum 70 characters) do not leave it as jpg of September 2014; Give a memorable relevant title.

The Alt and Title tags describe the image. All tags must be short.

Where the image is on the page, there should be a relevant description.

When you share a link on media sites your image will be chosen automatically, if it’s not the one you want to display you can choose a different image by clicking the arrow in the preview.

Search engines select photos and images and make articles clickable on Google and social media, so include them with your tags and titles to help your post stand out. The more clicks and shares you get, the better your website will rank.
