Top 10 LDS Movies and Movies Most Mormons Would Be Familiar With

I was a student of Digital Media at university, which included studying film. While studying film and being a Mormon, I realized that members of the Mormon faith love movies, but there are certain movies that Mormons are more familiar with than other groups. On my list I have excluded certain movies like Single Ward, RM, or other Mollywood movies (cheesy Mormon movies). Here is the list that I came up with:

  1. Princess Bride – Although many people outside the Mormon church have seen this movie, for some reason church members know about this movie. When I was in high school and grew up in a Mormon community, everyone had seen this movie. Although popular outside of Utah, most people aren’t exactly big fans. This movie is romantic without all the sexual content found in many romantic movies and comedies.
  2. Three Amigos – For whatever reason, everyone I know who is younger Mormons has seen this movie. Steve Martin is in this movie, yet despite popular myth, Steve Martin is not a member of the church. This movie has some lines in Spanish, which makes the returned missionaries who served in Spanish-speaking areas feel special because they know what they are saying.
  3. UHF – This movie was not very popular in theaters, however it has become a cult classic in Mormon communities. Despite the unfair rating of PG-13, it has remained popular, many members shy away from movies with higher ratings than PG. Not many people know this, but the late Billy Barty, who played Noodles McIntosh, was a Mormon. They also played a short recording of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
  4. Johnny Lingo (The original from 1969) – Who can forget phrases like “Mahana you are ugly” or “8 cow wife”. This movie is a classic among Latter-day Saints. This is probably one of the reasons many Utah people want to be Polynesian.
  5. The Legend of Johnny Lingo – Loosely based on the 1969 BYU original movie. This movie didn’t fare as well as they changed the story, however due to the name the members gave this movie I don’t think it’s Such a bad movie if you forget you ever saw the original movie while trying to digest what’s going on.
  6. Encrypted in the Snow: As youth growing up in Utah, this was shown to us every year to try and make us feel guilty and sad. It is the story of a child who dies because he is not loved at home or at school.
  7. The Phone Call: This movie has been shown for years to try to help teens gain self-confidence. Marc McClure, who played the goofy Scott, also played Jimmy Olsen in the original Superman movies.
  8. Another Side of Heaven – Collected by Disney, this film shares the missionary experiences of a missionary sent to Tonga. Many non-members have seen this movie as it has the ever popular Anne Hathaway as the missionary’s girlfriend.
  9. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – I had a hard time watching this movie, but for some reason most Latter-day Saint women have seen and love this movie. The strong reference to large families and musicals makes it a favorite of Latter-day Saint women.
  10. Emma – (Actually, any movie that portrays Jane Austen’s work) For whatever reason women in the Mormon faith love Jane Austen’s romantic books and movies, Emma is just one example. The culture of the time period that she portrays is actually a close match with modern Mormon culture.

What draws LDS church members to movies tends to be entertaining, moral, and original. They appreciate movies that represent the values they hold dear and can be enjoyed by the whole family.
