The Sony Xperia S and Samsung Galaxy S2: A look at display technology and processing power
The new Sony Xperia S smartphone looks set to be a big hit with consumers thanks to some brilliant specs including a high-quality display and an excellent camera. Only time will tell if this model can overtake the Samsung Galaxy S2 as the leading Android device. We look at both models to see what display technology they come with, and also to check the processing power available.
Samsung has always produced high-quality mobile screens, and several other manufacturers purchase Samsung screens for use in their own devices. The Galaxy S2 offers one of the best displays available. The models use a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen that produces a vivid image that many devices struggle to match. The phone performs well in natural sunlight and viewing angles are also very impressive, which is ideal if you’re sharing photos and video content with friends and family. The screen can display a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, resulting in an impressive pixel density of 217 pixels per inch. The new Sony Xperia S uses the same screen size, but uses LED backlight technology instead of Super AMOLED. Technically, Samsung’s screen is capable of displaying a more vivid image, but Sony has made up for it by allowing its screen to display an excellent resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. This has a positive effect on pixel density and allows the Xperia S to offer 342 pixels per inch. This makes it the first phone to go beyond what the famous iPhone 4S Retina display can offer. Multi Touch support is also broader than its rival and can register up to ten individual touch points on the screen instead of the two recognized by the Galaxy S2 and many other models. Despite Samsung’s use of Super AMOLED technology, they still can’t quite match the overall screen quality on offer in the Sony Xperia S.
At the time of its launch, the Samsung Galaxy S2 was the fastest phone available thanks to a powerful 1.2 Ghz processor that is part of the excellent Exynos chipset. This package also incorporates a high quality graphics processing unit in the form of a Mali 400MP chip. This chip ensures that users can enjoy a great gaming experience on the device. Despite not being the most powerful processor available, the S2 still runs very fast thanks to the quality of the processor and the energy efficiency of the software package that the phone uses. The Sony Xperia S uses a more powerful 1.5 Ghz dual core Qualcomm processor coupled with an Adreno 200 graphics processing unit. Although the model offers more processing power in actual use, there is very little to choose between. both phones in terms of operating speeds. This doesn’t reflect badly on Sony, the S2 has always been one of the leading phones in this department and many models have tried to compete with it and failed. What we’re looking at here are two of the fastest phones currently available.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 was one of the most advanced phones of 2011, and for this reason, the model turned out to be a great success among consumers. As we move into 2012, several manufacturers are releasing models that dwarf what the S2 can offer, and the Sony Xperia S is a great example of such a device.
