Owning a blue and gold macaw requires your time and devotion

More and more people are considering owning a blue and gold macaw. The truth is that only a few should.

Just pay attention to the number of macaws sold by private owners. Too often, people simply bite off a lot more than they may or may not understand the amount of time, dedication, work, and commitment that owning a macaw parrot entails.

Macaw parrots’ beauty, out-of-this-world colors, affectionate / playful nature, and general intelligence are likely to make these birds almost irresistible to animal lovers.

For many people, sadly, they buy on impulse when they buy one of these magnificent birds. Buying a macaw is often based on a nice casual presentation and not an appreciable amount of research prior to purchase.

Well-trained, loving, and intelligent macaws are not something that just happens. That bird is the product of love, care, devotion, understanding and work. For those who own and love macaws, it may be the most rewarding job, but it’s a job all the same.

The work begins with dedicated, reputable breeders who feed and socialize the chicks. After the purchase, that socialization should be an ongoing process. The breeder’s commitment and dedication is why hand-fed babies make the best companions.

By hand feeding babies, breeders instill humans as essential to the babies’ existence and as a natural and normal part of their herd. This makes humans a recognizable part of the bird family.

It takes a true expert to tame a blue and gold macaw or other than a hand-fed chick. Most of them will never become as loving, gentle, and happy to be a part of the family as the hand-fed bird would. The first step in socializing any large pet bird is hand feeding the chicks.

Personal attention from breeders goes a long way as it helps to ensure that anyone who is willing to continue the process will likely continue to have a good-natured, trainable, and loving bird.

Unfortunately, most or too many potential owners do not fully understand the importance of continuing the socialization process initiated by the breeder. Therefore, having a lot of time and even more desire to continue the process is a must before someone has to buy a macaw.

With large birds like the blue and gold macaw, the socialization process must continue for life. Left alone to fend for themselves, macaws can easily reverse themselves. They can get much wilder than a loving and kind companion.

If left alone for a long time or too often, the macaw can easily lose any interest in being that adorable bird and companion that it first bought. It can become the fowling, aggressive, extraordinarily loud and destructive bird that it is capable of becoming.

If done correctly, having a macaw parrot is as rewarding as having any other pet, for me it is more. I can’t think of any other pet that will bond more closely or for as long as the macaw or other large parrots.

For me and perhaps because macaws are not domesticated animals, the union is of a more personal nature. Perhaps it is the sole fact that macaws are not domesticated that makes the union so remarkable and heartfelt.

The Blue and Gold Macaw is not for the casual pet owner. If you lack the time, dedication and commitment to supply your needs, the Macaw is not a good option. The blue and gold macaw almost demands that you take your time and provide not only physical attention, but emotional support as well. He can be almost manic in his need for your attentions, but he can be just as manic when it comes to showing and giving his affection to those within his flock.

Mainly due to their loving and friendly nature. Rarely will a blue and gold macaw prefer to be left alone. A well socialized macaw will want to be included in everything you do. Most of the time, a blue and gold macaw just wants to be with you helping you do whatever it is you are doing. You can’t help it. It’s their nature.

Without a doubt it is your time, your affection, your devotion and understanding that allows a Macaw to become such a wonderful companion. It easily turns into another beautiful bird without your commitment.

Because having a macaw means giving a lot of yourself. It is unlikely that the experience will ever be repeated with any other type of animal. Life with a macaw becomes intensely personal and rewarding. The bonus is. The experience can last a lifetime.
