Question: No matter how long an insurance agent has been in business, there was always a time when he or she was a novice. Can you remember what prompted you to start a career in claims?

Answer 1: Actually, my exposure to the industry arose from my own requirements. I personally was looking for auto coverage. The problem was that all the agencies I went to offered very expensive premiums. It was only after I mentioned this to some of my college mates that I found a different approach. They directed me to a specific agency that displayed a level of customer service that seemed unique. They took an honest interest in me, sat me down to discuss my unique situation, and searched their extensive network of providers to provide me with a custom plan at a competitively low rate. It was then that I decided that this was what interested me in a profession.

Answer 2: In fact, I was looking for a job in the market when a good friend who had just passed the state insurance test suggested the idea to me. At first, I scoffed at the prospect. After I put the head of the agency where he worked, things changed. I was so impressed with the ‘location of events’ that I opened myself up to this as a career option.

Question: What kind of training did you take to become an insurance agent?

Answer 1: As for anyone interested in this field, I had to attend classes on the subject. This culminated in a test, after which I received my insurance license. However, I have to admit that without the on-site training I received from the agency that hired me, I wouldn’t have as much knowledge or skill. It is a training that does not end in the initiation process. To this day, I can honestly say that I can rely on my superiors for backup training in all aspects of the field.

Answer 2: Training for me incorporated a licensing course, written exams, and on-the-job training.

Question: What part of the job amazed you the most?

Answer 1: Coming from being outside of insurance as a client, I didn’t fully realize the importance of having an honest agent who could guide you through the insurance maze.

Answer 2: Before entering the industry, I had no idea how vital insurance is to all facets of life!

Question: Any advice for others who might be considering becoming an insurance agent?

Answer 1: Without a doubt, the beginnings are difficult. However, if you have a reliable agency behind you and give it your all, chances are you will succeed!

Answer 2: If someone tells you that the industry is flooded, don’t listen! Invest in the effort. Earn the trust of your customers by being honest and direct and you will reap the results!
