ICANN vs. Internic

Business

One of the first things you’ll see when choosing a domain registrar is mention of the words Internic and ICANN. Don’t let this confuse you because they are very simple to understand.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the system that looks through all registered domain names to make sure no one else has bought them. Another service they perform is the assignment of IP addresses for domains. They work with web hosting services to ensure that all domains have a unique IP address.

Web hosting companies buy your IP addresses and use them to assign them to customers. If the server they are using is shared, many domain names may have the same IP address. Domain names must go to the IP address that is assigned to them, and this is another aspect of ICANN. In addition, the domain registrar can be accredited. This simply means that they agree to meet or exceed the standards set by ICANN.

Customers will be assured of receiving the quality and support they need by choosing a domain registrar that has been accredited by ICANN. Internic and ICANN are owned by the same corporation. Internic maintains a list of domain registrars that are accredited so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. This will give clients the assurance that the domain registrar is following the regulations set forth by ICANN.

When the Internic provides domain name information to the public, the following happens. The lookup for a domain name, WHOIS is started, the Internic server finds the name and displays the information. Internic organizes domain names that are registered through an ICANN domain registrar to display the latest WHOIS information about the name.

If you find a domain registrar that doesn’t meet the standards set by ICANN, there is a form you can fill out to submit it. Along with this, there is also a form to report a domain name that is not correct but is listed in the Internic directory.

Who is ICANN?

ICANN is headquartered in Marina del Rey, California. The corporation was originally created in 1998 to oversee the work that was originally handled by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). This was work done for the United States government. Organized under the California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporations Act, ICANN is a nonprofit corporation used for “charitable and public purposes.”

There are six representatives that make up the Board of Directors. There are eight who represent the interests of the public and the president and CEO. The introduction of generic top-level domains (TLDs) is one of the things that ICANN has been concentrating on. Another is the preservation of the operational balance of the Internet.

What is Internic?

Internic was the first to provide information to the public about domain registration services. This was until 1998 when ICANN took over. The Internic website was internic.net and was operated by AT&T and Network Solutions, Inc. Internic is licensed by ICANN and is a ‘registered service mark of the US Department of Commerce’.

Created in 1993, the National Science Foundation created the Internet Network Information Center (Internic). The creation was to manage address assignments. The contract was awarded to three organizations. Directory and database services were awarded to AT&T, network solution registration and information were awarded to General Atomics.

When it comes to web hosting services, IP addresses need to match without a problem, so taking care of this aspect is left behind and this is one of the tasks that ICANN is directly responsible for. If you decide to choose a domain registrar that is not an ICANN-approved registrar, you will probably end up paying too much for your registration. Typically these are resellers and they will end up using an ICANN registrar, but they will resell it to you, so the cost will be higher.

One thing to keep in mind is that an authorized domain registrar is the only one authorized to access the master database supported by Internic. They are also the only ones who can make changes to the database. The web hosting service you choose must be ICANN and Internic compliant. To ensure that you receive the best possible service and domain name registration of your choice, it is essential to use these services to ensure that the name is all yours.
