Effective natural remedy for hair loss

Most scalp hair loss is normal. Adults have approximately 100,000 hairs on their heads. These hairs follow a predictable pattern of active growth, followed by a period of rest and shedding. The growth period can last from two to ten years, while the resting/molting stage can last only a few months. On average, you lose and replace around 50 to 150 hairs per day. Hair grows slightly faster in women than in men. Visible hair loss occurs when the number of hairs in the growth phase no longer keeps pace with the number of hairs in the shedding phase. Men tend to lose hair around the front of the face and the crown of the scalp. Hair loss in women tends to appear as general thinning.

Hormones are believed to play a key role in the growth and loss of scalp hair. It is known, for example, that while testosterone and other androgens are largely responsible for body hair growth at puberty, these same androgens are key to hair loss in adults. Many birth control pills are androgen-dominant and can stimulate hair loss. Estrogens are believed to help slow scalp hair loss and promote healthy scalp hair growth. The process is not only hormonal, but can also be related to other substances in the blood going to the hair follicles.

Nutritional deficiencies or excess carbohydrates and animal fats can cause hair loss. Increasing protein intake by 14 grams a day increases the diameter of each hair by 14 percent. Foods that contain vitamin B stimulate hair growth. To supplement the daily diet, nutritionists suggest a multivitamin-mineral, a B-complex stress tablet, 1,000 milligrams of choline and inositol, and 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C.

External care is also important. Overzealous brushing or towel drying can prematurely dislodge these hairs or break them into the follicles to prevent or delay the appearance of new hairs. Buildup of dull cells, dirt, or shampoo residue can hinder growth by clogging the tiny openings. The use of constant gentle cleansing and these natural growth stimulants often solve the problem:

o Two or three times a day, massage a small amount of one of these traditional salves into your scalp: a mixture of two tablespoons of castor oil and lard with ¼ teaspoon of rosemary oil. Or ¼ cup of almond oil or olive oil with ½ teaspoon of rosemary oil and three drops of lemongrass oil.

o Twice a day, massage the scalp and hairline in small circular motions with your fingertips or an electric vibrator.

o At bedtime, massage your scalp with aloe vera gel; shampoo in the morning.

o Use rosemary tea as a rinse after shampooing.
