Newberry is one of the oldest and most historic towns in Upcountry South Carolina. Its downtown historic district is the hub of the community and attracts many visitors who attend festivals, concerts, and other events. Visitors to Newberry will be delighted to find a number of excellent dining options available to them. Here are some of the most popular.

Delamater’s is located on Boyce Street, just three doors down from the Newberry Opera House. It occupies a historic building that once housed the Bank of Newberry. Delamater’s just celebrated its 10th anniversary and won the Newberry Observer’s Reader’s Choice Award in 2008 and 2009 for Best Gourmet Dining. They specialize in American cuisine with a European twist and offer daily specials for lunch and dinner. Delamater’s offers an interesting selection of appetizers including Maryland crab dip and goat cheese fondue. Dinner entrees include Chilean sea bass, shrimp and grits, and filet mignon. The lunch menu offers sandwiches, burgers, and salads. A children’s menu is available.

Steven W’s Downtown Bistro is located in a historic building on Main Street, across from the Opera House. Owner and chef Steve Foulis, who opened the restaurant in 1996, has more than 40 years of experience running successful restaurants in Atlanta, Savannah, Charleston, and Columbia. The restaurant’s entrees include grilled marinated pork and pecan-crusted chicken with blackberry sauce. Homemade dessert selections vary each night. Steven W’s Downtown Bistro has been featured in Southern Living Magazine.

Cabana Restaurant and Storm Cellar Wine and Cigar Bar, also established in 1996, is located in the center of Boyce Street. The main dining room serves steaks, fresh seafood, and homemade soups and desserts. Storm Cellar is a full service bar located below the restaurant. They offer a wide selection of wines, spirits, beers and cigars. There is also a large screen TV for watching sporting events.

Visitors looking for casual dining options can enjoy The Grill on Main for lunch or dinner. They offer burgers, catfish, and steaks in a relaxed atmosphere within walking distance of downtown shops. The Flying Pie, also located on Main Street, has a selection of Italian food including pizza, panini, and pasta entrees. The Palms Bar and Grill, located on Wilson Road, offers steaks and seafood in a casual setting. They have a full service bar with three big screen TV’s. There is also outdoor patio seating. The Palms is closed on Sundays.

Visitors to Newberry can enjoy one of these excellent restaurants. Whether you’re in town for an event at Newberry College or a concert at the Newberry Opera House, be sure to dine at one of these local favorites.
