This is a book that has it all; friendship, love, violence and drugs. the furies by Corey Croft follows the story of a group of Fury’s friends. In their senior year of high school they are faced with a series of difficult decisions. It is about doing it for just one more year; it’s about discovering what comes next when worlds of possibilities open up in front of them. Or them? But, above all, it is a story about different ways of reconciling with oneself.

Set in the midst of the drug boom of the 90s, the narrative faithfully sums up the spirit of the times. The plot exudes cultural references typical of that time that takes the reader on a playful journey through time. Fury City is where it all happens. It is a city, like no other, where social and racial division fills the air. And also the smell of grass. Corey Croft takes you beyond a perfect layout of middle-class life that takes you down dark alleys and shows you what lurks behind closed doors. the furies it is about ways of fighting and adapting to what life throws at you. And furions sure know how to punch back. But there is also a softer side to his wild nature: a childlike naivete that persists into his teens.

A colorful cast of characters brings the town to life at the center of which is the trio of Cava, Sally and Luc with a C and around them is a fluctuating wave of characters that will ensure a dynamic narrative. Beyond stereotypes, Corey Croft makes sure to delineate multidimensional characters with believable backstories. The novel exposes the battlefield between the psychological and the sociological perspective. If the individual determines his own destiny to the detriment of the environmental influence, or on the contrary, does the social dictate the result for the individual? It is a thousand-year-old question, which has not been resolved in the furies but it is portrayed in an exemplary manner.

all in all, the furies it’s a gritty piece sprinkled with tenderness and care: caring for a friend, family member, or lover. One thing is certain, the pages of the book are full of passion and powerful feelings at opposite ends of the spectrum. The author achieves the supreme feat: to move the reader. It’s hard not to join in on the Corey Croft chant: FURY! – U.S!
