Australian king parrots are a medium-sized parrot and, as their name suggests, they are native to Australia. They are the largest of the local brightly colored Australian parrots. By far they are the largest parrot in Australia, measuring between sixteen and seventeen inches long and weighing seven to eight ounces. This parrot is a particularly robust and vigorous bird; their lifespan in captivity can average from twenty to twenty-five years.

The Australia King Parrots are also known as The King Lory, Queensland King, Southern King Parrot, Australian King, and The Eastern King. Australian royal parrots are inhabitants of the coastal mountains of Australia and the forested regions of Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. While wild birds are primarily seen in eastern regions of Australia, wild royal parrots are commonly seen in populated areas such as parks and gardens.

In the wild, Australian royal parrots eat fruits, berries, seeds, and small insects. During the early morning and late afternoon, the wild Australian king parrot can be seen in groups of three to five flying to their daily foraging grounds. They are known to destroy orchards and corn crops. They are largely considered pests by most farmers.

Birds are known to have a preference for the white cedar fruit. It is very common to see them eating ripe kiwis, figs, and eucalyptus pod seeds. When kept in captivity, they usually eat commercial bird food from a feeding tray. Their diet can be supplemented with passion fruit, kiwi, sunflower seeds, and fresh corn on the cob. They seem to prefer feeding first thing in the morning.

The birds are not known to be overly affectionate and may not feel well handled. However, birds are in no way antisocial. In fact, they seem to enjoy interacting with their caregivers. Birds are an excellent alternative to more vocal parrots. They are calm parrots and tend not to scream, which is why they are highly sought after due to their good character. While they are not the best conversationalists among parrots, they can learn to say a few words. When they vocalize, the owners are entertained by their very pleasant chatter and whistles.

Often described as beautiful, Australian royal parrots have a highly visible color pattern. It consists of a combination of mainly red and green colors. The heads of the males are deep red, while the heads and breasts of the females are green. In general, both sexes have read the belly and the green color runs down their tails and wings. The back and wings are usually dark green with a lighter green patch on the shoulders.

Keep in mind that it is a curious and intelligent bird. They will need a large cage to stay active. As mentioned above, they are abundant birds and should be exercised outside of the cage every day. The standard exercise for this bird is three to four hours outside of the cage so give them a lot of attention and they will reward you with a lot of love.
