Austin Zoo: An In-City Animal Shelter
The Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is located in the countryside on the outskirts of the city of Austin, Texas, and is an ideal place among the things to do for children in Austin. The zoo has more than 300 animals and more than 100 separate species. The Austin Zoo is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of animals that cannot survive in the wild. The Austin Zoo is one of Austin’s top attractions as it attracts thousands of visitors annually, offers an exciting zoo experience, and allows visitors to see the wide variety of animals from a close distance. Austin Zoo opened in 1990 as a goat ranch called the Good Day Ranch, created to house and protect animals that need special assistance and are unable to care for themselves, until it eventually became a dedicated visitor spot as a of things to do in Austin. for all kinds of visitors.
The zoo provides a habitat for different big cats such as pumas, Bengal tigers, African lions, jaguars and recently two specimens of Barbary lions which are believed to be extinct in the wild were delivered to the zoo. Some of the monkeys that can be seen at the zoo include the capuchin monkey, the colubus monkey, and the common marmoset. Inhabitant reptiles at the Austin Zoo include the iguana, Galapagos tortoise, leopard gecko, Texas leucistic rat snake, northern blue-tongued skink, and albino corn snake. Other animal species include amphibians such as the large and testy African bullfrog, along with a variety of bird species such as the chattering lory, blue and gold macaw, African grey, Malacca cockatoo, umbrella cockatoo, as well as large peacocks and emus. Other less exotic and more domestic animals are housed in the zoo, such as the llama, the pot-bellied pig, the miniature donkey and the longhorn.
The zoo is reasonably clean and well maintained by its staff, providing an excellent opportunity for a family outing.
