Are you Balanced or Spinning?

I’m sure we all like to believe that we can balance all the important parts of our lives: friends and family, nutrition, play, exercise, work, and spirituality. But come on, sometimes that doesn’t seem like a dream… or maybe it’s just me.

I recently finished remodeling my kitchen and downstairs bathroom with my husband. This was not an easy task. We did most of the work ourselves, and by the end of the second week it was over. My hands were bruised and my body was reacting in a way it was unfamiliar with: the pain was elevated to a whole new level.

I let several things go: going to the gym, writing, socializing and meditating. I felt conflicted. I was very happy with the results. Our kitchen and bathroom looked great, beautiful in fact. I knew that the work we put in would help us when we tried to sell our house. But, now that I’m struggling to get caught up in the spirit of work (and all the other stuff), I feel listless and uninspired.

I am out of balance. The last 3 weeks have disrupted my flow and I feel a bit guilty for not taking care of business now that I have free time.

The truth is that I love my life. I feel so lucky to live in a comfortable home in a beautiful city. I have a great family and I love what I do for a living. My intention is to live in the moment as much as possible, to stay focused on the task at hand, so that I can get the most out of what I’m doing.

So this brings the challenge of balance. If you’re so focused on one task at hand, whether it’s remodeling a kitchen or writing a series of articles, how do you make time for the other seven (or so) parts of your life?

First of all, I have come to the conclusion that any feelings of guilt should be thrown out the window. This emotion serves no purpose but to make things worse.

Second, give yourself a break. Love yourself enough to know that it will be done when the time is right. It is not your job (or in your best interest) to make others perceive you as a Super Hero. If you are able to engage in any task in a way that allows you to lose yourself, you are on the right track.

And third, step back when you finish your homework and take some time to reflect. If it’s a nice day outside, go for a walk. If it’s too cold or rainy, choose a cozy spot indoors. Sit back with a hot cup of tea, put on your sweatshirt and relax.

In the quiet moments, the answers will come. Close your eyes and stay still. No need to ask questions or search for answers. Everything you need to know is within you, all the time (our inner source). Use this source and your world will stop spinning and you will begin to balance yourself in a comfortable way.
