Are computers a blessing or a bane?

Gone are the days when things used to be typed by hand or letters filed in files and stored in cabinets. Now everything is done with the click of a mouse. Computers are used for all kinds of jobs, whether it’s writing letters, keeping accounts, creating presentations, or even keeping in touch with loved ones.

Today, man is so dependent on the computer and the Internet that he would feel lost if he did not have a computer even for an hour. Is so much dependency really a good thing or not? Do we call the computer a blessing or a bane? Initially, when computers were invented, they were seen as something that would reduce dependency on humans and make things quick and easy for everyone. But instead of reducing the dependency on humans, we have shifted the dependency onto computers.

Of course, it is much easier to handle everything on computers, because you can program a lot of things in it in such a way that you can have a lot of calculations and reports in just a few minutes. But what about the fact that children these days have access to unnecessary information via the Internet? Computer games are so popular with children that some may even choose to skip their outdoor games to play on the computer. Now, do we call this an advantage?

On the other hand, anyone can find out about anything in the world, any news from any corner of the world. What’s more, through social networking sites, one can get in touch with people they knew decades ago but had lost touch with. There is so much information available on the internet and there are so many ways a computer can be used to do different types of projects for students. There is no shortage of learning when it comes to a computer. But how many of us try to learn new things on the computer every day?

Therefore, it is not wrong to say that the computer as a technology is not a bad thing. In fact, it can help humans in all walks of life. But it is up to us humans, who use it, to make the best possible use of it. If we are going to derive knowledge from it, we will get the same thing, but if we choose to derive negative things from it, that is what we will get. Therefore, we must try to make the most of this technology and spread more and more awareness about it, thus encouraging the use of this great technology for information and communication in general. After all, thanks to computers and the Internet, today we can book our travel tickets and pay our bills from the comfort of our home instead of standing in long lines and wasting time. But if the same tickets cancel themselves, then it may be a glitch in programming and not in technology. Why blame technology for this and why shouldn’t we start reaping the benefits of this technology?
