A guide to hotel bedding sizes

Tours Travel

Hotel quality bedding, duvets and towels are a cut above the rest and that is why hotel rooms always have that sumptuous and luxurious feel. However, how do we know what the industry standards are for making your hotel room so comfortable?

Linens:

Bedding in hotel rooms has a lovely, luxurious feel to it and this is often due to the thread count of the bedding itself. The higher the thread count in the item, the softer and more comfortable the bedding appears to be. Thread count is the number of fibers horizontally and vertically within one square inch of the material and the higher the count, the better the quality. Hotel bedding has a thread count of around 300-400 thread count.

This is then placed over the beds in the room, of which there are several different sizes. Exact measurements may differ slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer.

UK bed measurements:

• Single: fitted sheet – 90 x 190 cm; Flat sheet – 180 x 265 cm; Duvet cover – 137 x 203 cm

• Double: fitted sheet – 141 x 196 cm; Flat sheet – 230 x 275 cm; Duvet cover – 198 x 203 cm

• King size: fitted sheet – 152 x 200 cm; Flat sheet – 275 x 280 cm; Duvet cover – 244 x 234 cm

• King size: fitted sheet – 183 x 200 cm; Flat sheet – 305 x 305 cm; Duvet cover – 270 x 234 cm

Towels:

Towels are also subject to hotel-specific requirements and cotton towel width or weight is generally measured in GSM, ie grams per square inch. Low quality towels may have a GSM of 200. However hotel towels generally have a GSM of at least 600 and up to 800. This ensures that they are more absorbent and also softer as there is more cotton to absorb the liquid.

Bath towels in hotels usually come in four different sizes. Again, exact measurements may vary.

Types of towels and their sizes:

• Large towel – 100 x 178 cm

• Medium size bath towels – 70 x 137 cm

• Small size hand towels – 50 x 100 cm

• Smaller size towels: 33 x 33 cm

Duvets:

The duvet in hotel rooms is usually made from quality natural materials. The tog is how comforter insulation is measured and does not mean the thickness of the comforter as many people think. This is because different fillers can have the same tog, but differ in thickness.

Togs generally come in six sizes 4, 7.5, 10, 10.5, 12, and 13.5.

Typically, a 4 tog quilt is used for the warmer summer months, while 10.5 tog and 13.5 tog are used for the winter months.

So now that you understand the different sizes, thicknesses, and materials used by hotels, you can shop for all of your bedding, towels, and duvets with confidence.
