How to find the best electronic songs

Shopping Product Reviews

My choice of the best electronic songs will be unlike anyone else’s. Not because they know better or because they have a better ear, but simply because music is subjective. Seriously, who’s to say Kraftwerk’s “Autobahn” is better or worse than Daft Punk’s latest hit or Fever Ray’s songs for Catherine Hardwicke’s movie? little Red Riding Hood?

When it comes down to it, we really have to learn to trust our own feelings. Sure, the popularity factor comes into play. If a piece of music (of any genre) gains a lot of listeners, there’s probably something good about it. On the other hand, if nobody wants to listen to a song, maybe it could be improved.

But at the end of the day, no matter how many glorious accolades someone throws at you, if a track just doesn’t speak to you, then it just doesn’t. And that’s all there is to it. On the other hand, you can’t force yourself not to like a piece. That’s when we start talking about “guilty pleasures,” as if we should feel bad about enjoying something that others say isn’t good.

Electronic music in particular has a bad reputation on many sides. Some people say it’s not music, as if they have some sort of right to decide what goes into that category. Or you can read about the disappearance of culture or music (whatever that means), with electronics cited as proof positive of this dire state of affairs.

So if you’re trying to figure out what the best electronic music tracks are, you might want to reconsider your approach. Pick a few big names, and then browse with some free “similar artist” tools like Jango. I use it all the time to discover new music, including a lot of great indie artists who don’t get the same kind of exposure elsewhere.

When it comes down to it, it is you who will decide what is the best music for you. It’s all a subjective process anyway. So listen to what you like and never apologize.

(And please don’t start arguments in the YouTube comments section about which track is better than another. No one really wants to read that, plus there’s no way to resolve the argument. It’s like arguing that blue is better than blue.) red).

The best way to find great electronic music is to keep an open mind and open ears. There’s enough that you’re sure to discover hidden gems, as long as you’re willing to give new artists a chance.
