DIY ideas with baker’s twine

Home Kitchen

Baker’s twine is one of the most versatile craft items. Initially, bakers used it to wrap freshly baked bread and cakes. Usually a baker’s twine was white with red stripes. Today these lovely striped twine come in a variety of colors and can be used for various things. In today’s article, I’ll put together a whole collection of ideas that I found on the internet.

Trussing meat:

Initially, the twine was used to tie meat. These strings were made with safe edible dyes back then. Properly tying the meat helps keep it in shape and prevents juices from running. Therefore, most chefs have a spool of thread in their drawer. The easiest way is to start with a rope knot and loop the length again.

Tie baked goodies:

Freshly baked cakes and breads are carefully packaged with brown paper or butter paper and then secured with a colorful bakery string. Some bakeries have unique colors, knots, and packages that beautifully incorporate bakers’ twine.

Seal gift bags or bottled goodies:

Use a piece of baker’s twine and pieces of stiff fabric like organdy or organza to tie party favors. Spread squares of the fabric out on a table, place the favors in the middle, and pinch the ends of the fabric over the treats. Secure in a knot with this colored twine. You can also add printable labels for each small package. Bottled treats can be labeled and wrapped by securing paper or cloth over the mouth of the bottle and then tying it with kitchen twine.

DIY ideas for labels and cards:

Wrap a card in colored yarn and tuck it behind a die cut for beautiful patterned designs. Write on paper or any surface with glue and attach the string to get letters. For larger letters, make paper cutouts of the various alphabets and wrap them with kitchen twine. Draw different shapes on paper and spread glue on it, then carefully place this colored string for beautiful and colorful images.

Make your own bracelet:

There are several tutorials on the internet about the different ways you can braid / knot or crochet with baker’s thread. Not only can you make small bracelets or bangles, but you can also arrange these braided strands into different patterns for gift tags or cards.

Little pompoms:

Make small pom-poms out of string to use as ornaments while wrapping gifts. Wrap pieces of string around a fork to form an “8” with two ends on each side. Carefully remove the fork without disturbing the pattern and tie a string in the middle. Now trim the edges to get little pom poms that can be used to cover the gift wrappers.

Baker’s thread tassels:

Make baker’s twine tassels by winding pieces of twine around your fingers and slowly pulling them out of your fingers. Trim one end and tie a knot at the other for tassels. They can be used to decorate keychains, make bookmarks, etc.

These were some of the DIY ideas that I found interesting. Give them a try and send me your ideas in the comments below.
